Winter Heat

Splitting the winter heat!

Splitting the winter heat!

Our old Craftsman home has a great furnace – probably put in around 1970 or so – but we love the wood heat – it is just so much nicer.  If you are going to have the nice heat you want you have to feed that stove – that means someone is going to split and haul the wood.  We used to cut it as well – but will admit that the last three or four years we have purchased a load of logs with the neighbors.  The neighbor has a wood business so he usually gets it all cut up, we supplied the wood-splitter.  He uses it to split his firewood he sells and we go over and split and load our own.  Good neighbor arrangement.

We like to split and haul the wood in the spring and summer if possible.  We can stack it in our wood storage area and allow it to dry before it is time to burn. We will split, haul and stack about four cords for the winter.  Some days we both feel we are getting old – this is a big chore!
